Bringing life to Glasgow’s oldest building

Kalinin & Smirnova Duo / Dovzhenko: Earth - 28th September

  • A searingly beautiful hymn to nature, Oleksandr Dovzhenko’s silent firm Earth (1930) distils timeless, universal messages about life and death, adding lashings of Ukrainian spirit for good measure
  • For this exclusive screening Ukrainian musicians Misha Kalinin and Roksana Smirnova perform a new, jazz-based score they have composed especially for this event
  • Impressionistic soundscapes and atmospheric improvisations add new dimensions to Dovzhenko’s iconic close-ups and vast, sweeping landscapes

Event 5 / Sunrise (1927), Thierry Esciach - 29th September

  • Poignant, thrilling and darkly passionate, Murnau’s legendary romance-drama is a true classic
  • It represents the pinnacle of the silent film art form, and went on to win three Oscars at the first ever Academy Awards ceremony
  • Underpinning this cinematic masterpiece, Thierry Escaich brings his unique and fiery soundtrack to Glasgow’s gothic cathedral as he performs on the 140-year-old pipe organ

Glasgow Cathedral Festival

  • Glasgow Cathedral Festival brings music, art and education to the dramatic setting of Glasgow’s medieval cathedral
  • Now in its seventh season, the festival is becoming an established part of the city’s cultural landscape—promoting Glasgow’s historic quarter as a thriving artistic destination, attracting renowned Scottish and international talent, and engaging the wider community
