Style over substance

Starters were fine but both mains had elements that were poorly cooked. Of the Beetroot Tartan, the pastry was flabby, whilst one of the shallots - crispy onions - was blackened on one side and the other flabby.
However it was the venison that proved disappointing. Both cuts were hard going and one only edible by using the requested steak knife. The other was too tough even for the steak knife, though latterly it relaxed enough to allow some pieces to be just ok. Both were very chewy. The menu said "served pink" but both were medium to medium rare. However the main flaw appeared to be that there was insufficient resting.
We skipped the desserts.
Service was welcoming and attentive and taking my drinks off the bill because of my criticisms of the venison, was an appreciated touch.
We wouldn't not go back, but wouldn't race to do so. I'm sure things could be better.
As for recommending to friends it would be with "reservations"!

Lovely staff. The menu was different from the link on your voucher which had slightly more choice. It would also have been good to be able to choose between a starter or a sweet.
