Abbotsford House

  • Abbotsford is the extraordinary home of Sir Walter Scott, the 19th century poet, novelist and ‘Great Scott’ who popularised tartan and rediscovered his country’s Crown Jewels
  • Abbotsford remains one of the most famous houses in the world. Scott’s “conundrum castle” pioneered Scots Baronial architecture and was the place from where his writing transformed how the world saw Scotland and Scotland saw itself
  • Its walls are redolent of his worldwide success and his debt-ridden but noble final years
  • Each room you explore is kept just as Scott himself did and are packed full of fascinating items he collected - including an incredible example of a 19th Century writer's personal library
  • The gardens, designed by Scott, are a rare surviving example of a Regency layout. They aim to provide a harmonious transition between the luxury and comfort of the house with the wonders of nature in individual 'rooms'
  • Discover the picturesque South Court, the sunken Morris Garden, the walled kitchen garden and the late-Georgian Gothic glasshouse
  • Learn even more at the award-winning Visitor Centre where you can find a free exhibition on the life & times of Sir Walter Scott, indulge in a little shopping at the gift shop or enjoy a bite to eat and a hot drink
  • They've also got a packed calendar of tours, special displays, musical performances, children's activities and more to enjoy
  • One hour from Edinburgh by train or car
  • Rated 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor with a Travellers' Choice Award 2026
