Disappointing First Wedding Anniversary Stay

**Disappointing anniversary stay – poor communication**
We travelled from Glasgow to Peebles Hydro for our first wedding anniversary, hoping for a relaxing and special break. Unfortunately, several issues significantly affected our experience.
We had paid to upgrade our room for a view of the grounds, only to find a cherry picker directly outside our window throughout our stay due to maintenance work. Workers were sometimes directly outside the window, meaning we had to keep our curtains closed for privacy. We weren't informed about the planned work beforehand, and had we known, we wouldn't have upgraded.
The room itself also fell short of our expectations compared with the photos on the hotel's website. It felt old and tired, with very few finishing touches, no cushions or pictures on the walls, visible holes where pictures appeared to have previously hung, and an assortment of mismatched furniture. Overall, it lacked the care and attention to detail we'd expected.
We also experienced construction noise during our massages, and the jacuzzi was out of use throughout our stay.
On arrival, the hotel and car park were exceptionally busy due to a local cycling event involving around 2,000 participants. Traffic was terrible, the car park was packed, and arriving at the hotel was much more stressful than we'd anticipated. We appreciate the hotel wasn't responsible for the event, but feel guests should have been warned about the likely impact.
Our biggest frustration was the lack of communication. We had received promotional emails about activities and extras shortly before our visit, yet weren't informed about the maintenance work, unavailable jacuzzi or major event.
We raised our concerns with reception but didn't feel they were properly acknowledged. The responses we received felt dismissive and left us feeling that the impact on our stay hadn't been taken seriously. We later contacted management, who apologised and agreed to refund the room upgrade charge, which we appreciate. However, when we explained that we weren't keen to return and asked whether the future-stay offer could be extended to another hotel in the group, this was declined.
We understand that things don't always go to plan, but the lack of advance communication and the way our concerns were handled made an already disappointing anniversary stay even more frustrating. Sadly, we came away without the special memories we'd hoped for.
Faded Grandeur

Wasn't too impressed with this hotel. Don't agree with the apparent 4 stars. I asked for a twin room but got one bed and no fridge in the room for my friend to keep her medication in. Restaurant food was average and drinks expensive. On the positive side, staff were friendly and enjoyed my Spa treatment. Can't say I'd be rushing back

Quite special in every way

Everything we expected. Great food and attention to detail by staff. Lovely swim in the airy light pool. Beautiful weather and stunning scenery. Great Borders market down with independent shops and loads of excellent snack and restaurants within short walk.
Fabulous Stay

Peebles Hydro is a great place to stay. I booked a family room and it was spacious and comfortable. The food is excellent and the staff are courteous & friendly. The grounds are beautiful and well equipped with golf, chess & tennis. I would highly recommend a stay there.
Wanted to charge £10 for use of Wine Bucket!!

I asked for a wine bucket and barman said it would cost me £10. I said that was nonsence and he agreed. It would have helped if there had been a fridge in room for my water.
I have never been asked for payment on a wine bucket in any other hotel.

Was ok. Room was good as were the spa facilities and breakfast but service and food in the Miller lounge in the evening was disappointing.

My cousin and I had a lovely time at the hotel. The room was lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only downside was the breakfast. We didn't enjoy it.
Comfortable and clean

Nice room in extension with fabulous views. Clean and spacious. Very quiet in the evening. Unfortunately external work being done during day and either workmen up ladders or cherry pickers passing windows. Just unfortunate work bring carried out during our stay.
Breakfast was good with variety of items on offer. Evening meal in The Grill room was very nice. Only fault with this room is furniture requires upgrading, tables were badly stained.
Other than that enjoyable stay was had.
