The gardens
- Explore eleven distinct gardens, designed to display interesting and special plants, extraordinary colour, and innovative ideas
- Each space tells incredible stories through the plants chosen and how they're arranged. Spend hours in the serene settings and basking in the beauty of nature
- Experience a bit of history in the Arboretum, the Victorian Rose Garden and the historic Herb Garden that provides ingredients for the house to this day
- Then discover more modern displays such as the Laburnum Tunnel - designed for the Millennium - and the Garden of Persistent Imagination - the most recent addition to the house
Monteviot House
- A historic house that has been the family home of the Marquis of Lothian and the Kerr family for almost four centuries
- Throughout July the family offers guided tours of the house to showcase their generations of carefully curated art and antique furniture, telling the story of Scotland's rich heritage and of the family
- The sprawling gardens embody centuries of history and craft, and have been shortlisted for the Historic Houses Garden of the Year Award 2026
- Once you've finished exploring the gardens, you can enjoy woodland walks along St Cuthbert's Way and up to the Wellington Monument
- Or follow scenic paths to Harestanes Park - kids can enjoy the incredible playground while the grown-ups grab an ice cream and enjoy the picturesque setting

The Best Garden

We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at Monteviot. The gardens are extensive and beautifully laid out. We have visited many gardens over the years and this one was definitely the best! The lady who welcomed us was charming and helpful which we think is important. We bought a bottle of their apple juice from the honesty cabin and it was delicious. The whole experience was unforgettable.

I thought the opening times from 12-4pm was a bit restrictive, however there was plenty of time to get around, well maintained gardens, lovely clean toilets, perhaps a coffee shop would have made the experience a bit better. Very friendly staff who explained everything and took the time to engage with you personally.
